“Until a no-nonsense administration is in place to checkmate individuals who indulge in monstrous acts, until we get serious about curbing this social menace, worse cases are sure to rear up”. This was expressed by Hanamel, a social media user concerning the death of 13 year old Ochanya Ogbuja who died after being sexually abused by her guardian, Mr Ogbuja and his son, Victor Ogbuja.
This is a bizarre act as it is hard for one to understand why a person would hurt someone who was supposed to be under his guardianship, a minor at that, following the death of her mother. Ochanya was diagnosed of Vesticovaginal fistula, VVF and other related diseases after she took ill early this year. On investigation, she confessed that she had been molested my Mr Ogbuja and his son, Victor over the years. Her illness was caused through repeated penetration of the vagina and anus.
While Ochanya was being treated, the matter was also reported to the police who filed charges against Mr Ogbuja in August but he was later released in Mysterious circumstances by the court. His accomplice and son has also been said to have absconded. A lot of people, especially the Benue Women Forum BWF, headed by former Federal lawmaker, Mrs Rebecca Apedzan, The Federation of International Women Lawyers FIDA, both local and international NGOs, Federal Government Girl’s College FGGC, Gboko among others have decried the fate of the deceased and have said that the alleged culprits in the heinous crime should be brought to justice and should not be allowed to walk the streets freely.
Mr Ogbuja and his son need to be persecuted and brought to justice because the days of silence are over. How long are we going to keep turning a blind eye to the injustice that innocent children suffer at the hands of people who are supposed to love and care for them?? What excuse do these criminals have?? This was a young girl with a future, a young girl that should have been given the liberty to dream, a young girl that should have been happy but instead, was brutally plucked from the world on the 17th of October as her health deteriorated without achieving anything. She did not even get to experience what it would have been like to a be a teenager.
This is a clear case which does not need any form of debate. An innocent child has been wronged and it’s a tragedy that her life could not be saved but Ochanya must be avenged. May the society not turn a blind eye to what has happened and may the wrong doers be brought to justice. May the lawmakers not decide to allow their hands to be greased with money instead of doing the right thing. May cases like these be averted in future and may other children like Ochanya be safe.
Rest in peace, Ochanya.
